The Southern Alberta Energy-from- Waste Alliance is a coalition of waste management jurisdictions committed to researching and recommending for implementation technological applications for recovering energy from waste materials, and reducing reliance on landfills.

OUR FUTURE

The future of waste in Southern
Alberta needs to be based on
the 4 “R’s”.

- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
- Recover Energy from Waste

This forth “R” is as important as the other 3 and SAEWA’s goal is that the fourth “R” becomes the standard.

In the mid ‘90s Vulcan District Waste Authority (VDWA) made application to the Vulcan Planning Commission to develop and operate a land fill.

Through the public consultation process it became clear to the Vulcan District Waste Authority that a land fill was not something that was welcomed in the community. The land had been acquired, the engineering had been done and the development agreement was signed, but the public had not changed their feelings about having a land fill located in Vulcan County. VDWA asked its Manager of Waste to look for better alternatives to land filling. It became obvious that a waste to energy facility was the best option to deal with the waste material produced in the County.

Vulcan Business Development Society (VBDS) was asked if there was a grant available to help with the project. VBDS was able to secure a grant from Rural Alberta Development Fund. The basis of the grant was to find out three things:

* The type of Energy from Waste technology that would work in Southern Alberta
* The waste stream that would supply the plant and
* The partners that would supply the waste materials.

It was clear to all involved that this would need to be a regional project. An invitation was extended to all the Waste Authorities in Southern Alberta. After the first meeting 11 Waste Authorities signed a letter of intent to work together to form the Southern Alberta Energy from Waste Alliance (SAEWA).

SAEWA has been working for the past year to gather information and find answers to the questions that will determine how a plant could be built in Southern Alberta.

Since our first meeting one year ago SAEWA has grown to represent over 60 municipalities and is immensly proud of what we have accomplished.
